Game Reserve Print E-mail

Game ReserveIn 2001 approximately a third of the farm (60 ha) was set aside as a game reserve for the enjoyment of the people living on the farm (and as a stress reliever for the owner!).

Today this is a place of tranquility where you can unwind while watching Springbok playing or Bontebok chasing a Cape Fox over the veld.

The reserve includes a large storage dam stocked with bass and blue kurper and it is a haven for a large variety of water fowl and other birds.

Apart from small animals like Meerkat, Cape Fox, Porcupine, Cape Grysbok and Steenbok there are also Eland, Wildebeest, Springbok,  Zebra and the scarce Bontebok. Over time the Eland have become quite tame and they love to graze around the cottage.

Recent arrivals include Wildebeest calves and a Zebra foal, while an Eland calf was born early April 2010. We don't know the exact birth date as the Eland mother hides her calf for the first approximate 10 days until the calf is strong enough to join the adult Eland herd.

An interesting fact about Eland milk is that it is strong (very high butterfat content) since the small Eland initially only feeds when visited by the mother. In contrast a Wildebeest's milk is relatively weak (low in butterfat) as their young is strong enough to immediately join the herd, where it can feed as often as it likes.
